Raw terroir, precise techniques

A legacy of vineyards in félines

Located in Félines, in the heart of the northern Côtes du Rhône, Domaine Romain D’Aniello has been expanding since 2017 on the sun-drenched hillsides of Serrières, Limony, and Peyraud.

Here, the approach strikes a balance between respect for the environment and time-tested expertise. Each soil type and microclimate is carefully tended to reveal the region’s authentic character through its iconic grape varieties: Syrah for red wines that blend power and finesse, as well as Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne to produce aromatic white wines with delicate floral notes. Each bottle faithfully expresses the character and distinctiveness of the Saint-Joseph appellation.

The spark of a family transition

From farm to winery

In 2010, at just 20 years old, Romain D’Aniello took over the 3.5 hectares of vineyards from the family farm, which at the time were supplied to a cooperative winery. Driven by the commitment to excellence passed down by previous generations, he took a major step forward in 2016: creating his own winery to craft his own vintages.

The estate, named “Domaine des Pierrots” in honor of Romain’s grandparents, Pierre and Pierrette, has a history deeply rooted in the Félines region. Pierre, the grandfather, cultivated the vines to supply grapes to the Saint-Désirat cooperative, a common practice at the time. This close connection to the vines and the land left a lasting impression on the family and laid the foundation for a passion passed down from generation to generation.

After several years of producing wine exclusively for local cooperatives, Romain D’Aniello decided to transform the operation into an independent winery. Today, he cultivates and bottles his own vintages, offering a unique and personal perspective on the Ardèche wine region.

Romain acquired his expertise through a path that combined academic rigor with practical experience. After earning his degree following four years of study in viticulture and oenology, he honed his craft alongside renowned winemakers, notably Yves Cuilleron, an iconic figure in the region. These enriching internships allowed him to deepen his skills in winemaking and marketing, particularly for the grape varieties and appellations he now cultivates at the estate.

These experiences have shaped Romain’s philosophy: to produce authentic wines that are both respectful of the terroir and characterized by impeccable precision. In 2010, at just 20 years old, he took over the estate, which consisted of 3.5 hectares of vineyards and a few head of cattle.

Drawing on his extensive expertise, he officially released his first vintages with the 2016 harvest. Now renowned, Domaine Romain D’Aniello is located in the hamlet known as “La Remise”; major renovations began in the spring of 2017 to transform the old farmhouse into a winery.

Since its founding, Domaine Romain D’Aniello has expanded to its current size of 11.5 hectares, including:

  • 7 hectares under the Saint-Joseph AOP, specializing in Syrah for reds and Marsanne for whites.
  • 3.5 hectares in the Collines Rhodaniennes PGI, which are used to produce approachable and enjoyable wines.
  • 1 hectare in the Condrieu AOP

These plots, situated on sunny hillsides with granitic soils, benefit from an exceptional terroir at altitudes ranging from 160 to 330 meters, ideal for producing high-quality grapes. Each harvest is carried out with the utmost care to ensure that the wines reflect the unique identity of their terroirs.

Romain D’Aniello is committed to paying tribute to his family roots through his signature wines, each of which tells a story:

  • L’Empreinte de Papy: This red Saint-Joseph embodies robustness and depth, in homage to Pierre, Romain’s grandfather. This powerful, well-structured wine captivates with its aromatic richness and aging potential.
  • L’Esprit de Mamy : This white Saint-Joseph, full of finesse and elegance, is dedicated to Pierrette, Romain’s grandmother. With its floral notes and silky texture, it reflects the delicacy and generosity of his family memories.

These limited-edition wines are produced from carefully selected vineyards, offering small quantities but exceptional quality.

Over the years, Domaine Romain D’Aniello has evolved into a model of sustainable viticulture and artisanal production. Romain relies on environmentally friendly practices that promote sustainable viticulture. The modern tools and state-of-the-art facilities he uses ensure precise winemaking and impeccable quality, while preserving the authenticity of his wines.

This pursuit of excellence is reflected in every stage, from vineyard management to winemaking and bottling. The values of respect for the terroir, tradition, and innovation are at the heart of every vintage.

The history of Domaine Romain D’Aniello, rich in family traditions and a passion for viticulture, is a source of inspiration for future generations. Romain continues to carry on this legacy while exploring new horizons for his estate, with a clear ambition: to produce wines that captivate and delight, while remaining deeply rooted in this sublime terroir.
